SANTA
FE WOMEN'S SACRED WORLD MUSIC CHOIR - Directed by Madi Sato
In an ongoing series, learn
sacred and traditional repertoire from around the world including
ancient Baltic polyphonic chants, Afro-Brazilian invocations,
Japanese Nihon Minyo, Celtic sean-nos, American gospel hymns,
and medieval and modern liturgical music. Experience the powerful
art of group devotional singing with world harmonies and beats.
The intention is to direct
this choir in a different way from the standard and usual western
choir method. We work with a contemplative basis and invite all
voices to participate in the devotional art of the voice, creating
spontaneous group compositions.
We have road maps for each
chant and learn and practice the harmonics of nature, which are
found in the music of rain to the symphony of the wind. We also
employ simple laws of harmony utilized by contemplative chanting
traditions from the Gregorian chant tradition, as well as mantra
tradition from Tibet and improvisational vocal techniques that
induce a state of meditation and liberation.
Through listening, intention,
tone, breath and community as a basis for creating music, voices
will be free to sing in many registers rather than limiting the
voice to one range for an entire composition. Instead of working
with set and complex choral arrangements we will utilize sacred
text, mantra and seed syllables as the foundation or point of
entry into a choral piece.
